Tregubov is a retired sailor from the ancient noble family. According to I. Goncharov's recollections, he influenced his spiritual development much. As a result of his godfather's influence Goncharov had been dreaming about a voyage since childhood, and this dream came true in 1852-1855, when he traveled to Japan on the board of frigate Pallas being a member of the Russian diplomatic mission.
